Salisbury Democracy for America

Democracy for America is formed around the idea that democracy is, by definition, a grass-roots phenomenon.  It rises from the people, and is kept alive by the involvement of the people.  The power of government is granted by the governed, and any administration that forgets that loses legitimacy.

Statement of Purpose

Democracy for America - Salisbury is established for the purpose of advancing democratic values, peace, justice, integrity, and truth in government. We are a non-partisan, not-for-profit, organization of concerned individuals determined to speak out against those who work for Corporate over individual rights, an aggressive and militaristic foreign policy, and an entrenched military-industrial complex. We stand for a United States that cares as much for the welfare of its people as for the health of the stock market.  We stand for education for all citizens, universal health care, equal opportunity, and equal justice for all.

Fundamental to all of this, we stand for honest, fair, free, and open elections where each person who is eligible to vote is allowed to vote and has his or her vote counted. We believe the process must be open, transparent, subject to audit, and free of corporate or partisan interference.

We are not a political party, but pledge our support to candidates who support our values and our goals, and who show by their actions and votes, not just their words, that they stand in defense of those values. We will actively oppose any candidate who does not support those values. We believe rights reside in individuals, not corporations.  We believe that possession of wealth does not confer more rights.  We believe that government and our constitution exist to protect the people from external and internal threats, to guarantee individual rights, and to protect the poor and weak from the strong and wealthy. We believe that religious faith, or lack of faith, is a personal matter, and that government must be neutral with respect to religion, as was intended by the founders of this country.

We believe that the power of this country should only be used to defend and protect our citizens. We believe that sending our soldiers into harm's way is the most serious decision that our government can make, and that is should only be done when our national interest is clearly at stake or in defense of innocent life where it is threatened.  It must not be used to further the financial interests of powerful corporations or individuals, or to seize the wealth of other nations.  It must be based always on a full, complete, and truthful body of facts, honestly presented to the American people and our representatives.

We welcome all who share our values.
